About the team we are recruiting to

Coventry Youth Offending Service (CYOS) is a multi agency team consisting of staff from the Local Authority, Police, Probation, Health and Education. We work with children and young people age 10-18 who have offended and who are subject to court orders and out of court disposals.

Our aim is to prevent offending behaviour by children and young people, and we do this by engaging with professional/community support networks, children/young people and their families/carers to assess their needs and develop desistance-based plans.

We work with children/young people, their families and victims of youth crime in multiple settings including: the community, their homes, court and the custodial estate to offer support, guidance and management to build pro social behaviours and positive support networks.

CYOS is a well-respected service with a good performance background. In our last inspection by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Probation we were assessed to be “performing well in most areas.” We have a great team spirit evidenced by staff progression being supported through regular development opportunities and low sickness rates.

We participate in local best practice development activity as well as the regional initiatives; for example, supporting pilots to reduce youth violence in partnership with The West Midlands Violence Reduction Unit. We continue to strive to improve and are registered as a Restorative Organisation with the Restorative Justice Council and achieved the Quality Lead status with Achievement for All last year.

What is the job role?

We are looking to recruit a YOS Support Officer to work with children/young people, their families, parents/carers and the victims of youth crime to support engagement with the Youth Offending Service (YOS). This will include acting as a positive role model, providing advice, guidance and interventions in a range of arenas (including the YOS, children’s homes, secure estate, Court, Police stations and the wider community) on a one to one and group basis. 

The role will include:

• Working closely with victims of crime in line with agreed standards, such as Youth Justice National Standards and the Victim Charter.
• Encouraging and motivating children/young people and their parents/carers to participate in activities to change patterns of their offending behaviour.
• Undertaking assessments relating to risk and needs of children/young people, in order to complete and deliver effective intervention and support plans.
• Developing and delivering both individual and group programmes to meet the identified needs of children/young people.
• The monitoring and evaluation of programmes; this may include reparation activities, offending behaviour work, parenting/family support and victim support.
• Completing written case records, reports and evaluations, including the inputting of data onto information/case management systems.
• Undertaking the role of an appropriate adult in accordance with Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) 1984 where required including Police stations and secure estate and to support children/young people in a range of professional settings including the Court arena.
• Undertaking visits to support and provide intervention to children/young people in a range of settings, including their home, residential placements and the secure estate.
• Supporting the victims of crime including eliciting their wishes and feelings, updating them as required on the child/young person’s progress and the facilitation of mediation as appropriate.
• Representing the service in the Court arena, providing up to date and accurate information to assist in decision making and to present enforcement action. 
• Completing risk assessments of activities and programmes.

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for an individual who wants to make a positive difference and who has experience and skills/abilities that include:

• Have experience of direct work with children/young people and families in both a one-to-one and group setting
• Have an understanding of the issues faced by children/young people and understand the risk factors relating to being involved in crime.
• Have an awareness of local support services for children, young people, families and victims of crime.
• Can create, deliver and evaluate intervention sessions/programs.
• Can use technology including social media to communicate, complete case recording and create/deliver sessions.
• Are confident and professional when working with children/young people and other professionals in a range of settings or situations.

You will be required to:

• Work flexibly to meet the needs of children/young people, families & victims this will mean some evening working.
• Be on a rota undertaking approximately 9 Saturdays per year.
• Cover bank holidays (approximately two per year) in line with service requirements.
