Fleet Management is a key support service for many internal and external customers at Coventry City Council.  We are based in a fully equipped vehicle workshop at our Whitley Depot site and are responsible for the repair and maintenance of approximately 500 items including vehicles and plant machinery and equipment. We are also responsible for the provision of fuel to our customers, and in addition provide a driver training service to many customers.

What is the job role?

The Workshop Technical Engineer role is required to ensure that Fleet Workshops and associated functions are operated on a cost-effective, efficient, and productive basis in strict adherence to legislative and policy requirements and in line with prescribed procedures as stipulated by the Department for Transport Standards (DVSA) and manufacturing recommendations.

The role will be required to manage and deliver a high quality, value for money, and customer-focused service that ensures that vehicle availability is kept to the highest possible level, in line with customer operational requirements, and with minimum levels of 'downtime'.

You must have a detailed understanding of workshop-related activities (service, repair, and maintenance) and the importance of customer care.

You need to have a high level of technical competence in motor vehicle service, repair, and maintenance have extensive experience working on a range of vehicles and equipment, and be familiar with a diverse fleet of vehicles. Managerial/supervisory skills and experience will also be required to ensure effective management of the team.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for someone who has managed an HGV workshop, is up to date with current DVSA regulations, and a good technical knowledge around the servicing of HGV's, plant, and light goods vehicles.

Based at our Whitley Depot you would be responsible for:

  • Day-to-day running of a busy workshop
  • Planning of services, MOTs, Tacho Calibrations etc in compliance with current DVSA regulations
  •  Ensuring defects are dealt with as appropriately required
  • Deal with any on-the-road issues/breakdowns
  • Ensure completion of all relevant documentation
  • Controlling the ordering of parts and stock
  • Ensure Health and Safety compliance within the workshop
  • Oversee  staff training requirements
  • Actively pursue improvements/developments within the workshop
