The Education Service strives to deliver outstanding services for our customers, the children and young people of Coventry, including those who may be requiring access to education or alternative education provision. We ensure vulnerable children are appropriately supported; have a voice, that hopefully leads to their high achievement and excellent progress. The service is made up of a diverse range of teams all working together to recognise, support and apply innovative solutions to address the growing issues in relation to trying to educate some of our most vulnerable pupils in schools

The Outdoor Education Service delivers high quality learning and outdoor experiences to the children and young people of Coventry. It also upskills a range of educational practitioners in a variety of outdoor education courses and apprenticeships.

We currently offer a high quality, residential outdoor education programme to Coventry schools through our outdoor centre at Plas Dol-y-Moch in North Wales. They are an exceptional team, including qualified teachers delivering first-class education through the medium of the outdoors in a residential setting.

We want more children and young people to benefit from Outdoor Learning and Activity and are therefore expanding our service further through developing a high quality ‘In City’ provision. This will protect the long-term viability of the service and ensure that more children and young people have access to outdoor learning and adventure.

Coventry Outdoor Education Service, a trading service of Coventry City Council, is seeking a passionate and dedicated Therapeutic Lead for Outdoor Education to join our team. We are a leading provider of outdoor education programs, aiming to inspire and empower young people through engagement with nature and outdoor activities. As the Therapeutic Lead, you will play a pivotal role in delivering impactful interventions and programs that support the emotional well-being and personal development of young individuals.

Our programs are designed to promote resilience, confidence, teamwork, and self-discovery, and we firmly believe in the therapeutic power of nature and outdoor experiences.

As the Therapeutic Lead, you will have a unique opportunity to work closely with schools, educators, and young people, delivering training, providing therapeutic interventions, and developing innovative programs tailored to individual and small group needs. This role is based at Coombe Abbey Park, a picturesque and expansive natural country Park that offers a wealth of opportunities for outdoor learning and personal growth., however travel will be required to settings within Coventry and the surrounding areas.

You will collaborate closely with the school programme lead for Outdoor Education to ensure a cohesive and integrated approach to therapeutic interventions. Together, you will develop and implement programs that address the specific needs of our service users, fostering social and emotional well-being while promoting engagement with the natural world.

In addition to working directly with young people, you will also have the opportunity to develop and deliver alternative provision opportunities for young people not in mainstream education, creating exciting and enriching experiences beyond the traditional classroom setting. By forging partnerships with schools and other stakeholders, you will identify new service opportunities and promote the benefits of spending time outdoors as a therapeutic tool, widening access and participation.

As the Therapeutic Lead, you will be at the forefront of innovation, continuously exploring new approaches and methodologies in the field of outdoor education and therapeutic interventions. Your expertise and passion will contribute to the ongoing development of our programs, ensuring they remain relevant, effective, and impactful.

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking an individual with a strong background in delivering therapeutic interventions, preferably in an educational or outdoor setting. You should have excellent communication skills, a deep understanding of the principles of therapeutic and outdoor activities, and a commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and equal opportunities. Your ability to build rapport with young people, school staff, and external partners will be crucial in establishing and maintaining successful programmes.
