Our Planning Policy and Environment service is fundamental to supporting the sustainable growth of our city and the Head of Planning Policy and Environment will play a key role in enabling that growth. With responsibility for a new Local Plan in addition to a broad range of services including urban design, conservation, environmental protection and ecology this really is an opportunity to make a difference.

What is the job role?
Under the general direction of the Head of Planning Policy and Environment, the main duties and responsibilities will include :
- Delivery of a high quality urban design and heritage service in a way that contributes to the achievement of the City Council’s vision and objectives for a growing and sustainable city.
- To act as the principal technical advisorand expert on design and lead on heritage matters ensuring delivery of the service in line with national, regional and local policies.
- To deputise for the Head of Planning Policy and Environment where necessary.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for an experienced, creative, and talented built environment design professional who can deliver high-quality outcomes to represent Coventry City Council in public.
You will help shape this exciting time for Coventry and will join our top-performing and forward-thinking planning department. As manager of a specialised team, you will be able to shape development and planning policy to respond effectively to the ongoing growth and regeneration of our City.
You will need to have excellent design skills and the ability to produce electronic drawings and visual representations in order to successfully communicate design principles to a wide range of audiences.
The ideal candidate will have the following experience:
- Experienced in working in a professional Architectural / Urban Design role, with an understanding of the role of design in the enablement of high-quality development.
- Qualified Urban Designer and/or Architect, and member of associated professional groups.
- Experience working within a multidisciplinary design delivery team.
- Experience from design inception through to completion.
- Excellent IT skills, inclusive of working with AutoCAD and 3d Modelling software
- Experience as a team leader, with a track record of positive contributions to development and regeneration schemes.
- Experience working as part of a multi-disciplinary team and being able to work independently on own initiative.
- Excellent communication, negotiating, and presentation skills sufficient to represent the City Council in public to a variety of audiences.
- Have experience working alongside a team of professional planning and environmental officers.
- Have experience in the design field within both public and private sectors, with an appreciation of commercial influences in the development industry.
Key to all projects we work on is ensuring the new respects the old, whilst we also strive to continue to promote the City’s rich history of design innovation, you will be managing a team comprising Urban Design, Conservation and Archaeology, working with specialism which help shape the next chapter of Coventry’s evolution.
