About the team we are recruiting to
Coventry is a city that is changing fast – and we’re looking for skilled people to join our team and help take us into a bright new future. We are a city that is going places - with an inspiring, world-famous history and exciting times ahead.
Home to award-winning universities, top level sport and concerts and famous brands such as Jaguar and Severn Trent. We are a part of the ‘Midlands-Engine’, the home of the UK motor industry and a proud multicultural city.
Major developments are taking shape around the city, including a new-look shopping centre, a water park, new business quarter, restaurants and a modernised rail station. More and more firms and families are relocating to our city as they see what we have to offer.
Coventry is a great place to live and work and it’s getting even better - and having the right infrastructure is vital.
That’s why we are looking for people who are passionate, dedicated people who, like us, are determined to make real, positive change to Coventry.
The Council is committed to improving the quality of life for residents and making Coventry a top 10 city. We’re bringing in new, streamlined ways of working and making more use of technology to deliver services to the people who live and work in our city.
We know how hard our people work in our Highways, Traffic and Transportation Teams, and what it means to have a great manager who makes the time to say 'thank you'. So, with us, your work will always be appreciated and recognised.
We also know that to recruit passionate, dedicated staff in Highways, Traffic and Transportation where there’s simply more demand than available resource, we show our appreciation in other, more tangible ways, too - to make Coventry City Council an attractive place to work in terms of the benefits.
What is the job role?
Have you ever wondered who manages all of the traffic signals in Coventry? Would you like to be able to help people travel around Coventry safely and easily whether they are in cars, on foot or on bicycles? If you feel this appeals to you an opportunity has arisen for a UTMC Technician role to provide day to day support in managing the traffic in and around Coventry’s road network and to provide technical support within the Traffic Signals and UTMC team.
You will be required to undertake a variety of maintenance and administrative duties (mainly office based) relating to traffic signals, Intelligent Transport Systems and traffic engineering.
You will also be required on a daily basis to cover the UTMC control desk to watch how traffic is moving on our road network and taking action to keep traffic moving by adjusting traffic signal timings and keeping key contacts informed when an unexpected incident causes delays on the road network.
This service operates from 7am until 7pm, Monday to Friday and attracts an additional 10% shift allowance on top of the standard salary shown.
You must be able to work an early and late shift. These are 7am – 3pm one week and 11am – 7pm the next. You will also need to be flexible and be able to undertake some weekend and /or evening work to provide UTMC cover when there are major events on in the city and we expect an increase in traffic volumes, such as Rugby and Football matches, pop concerts and events such as Motofest and half marathons, the recent City of Culture events and Commonwealth Games. Overtime or time off in lieu is available for this work.
You will have plenty of opportunity to get involved in several projects as Coventry is embarking on an exciting period of growth. Whilst it would be advantageous for you to have relevant experience in this area of work it is not absolutely essential. If you are the right candidate and you can demonstrate that you are keen to learn, are flexible in your approach to work, you work effectively as part of a team and you have a pro-active attitude we’d like to hear from you
Who are we looking for?
You will be required to work 37 hours per week with the need to work 7am to 3pm one week and 11am to 7pm the next. On occasions there will also be a need to stay later than 7pm if there is a major incident on the road network that requires monitoring of traffic signals and manual management of the timings of the signals until traffic congestion is minimised.
There will also be a requirement to work overtime as required to cover major events including pop concerts, sporting events and other events that involve some of the road network being closed and traffic diverted elsewhere, which is shared across the team.
