Teacher in Charge - Gateway Service
About the team we are recruiting to
The Gateway is a service to support some of our most vulnerable and challenging primary age pupils who have been permanently excluded from their mainstream school. The children are at a critical crossroads in their educational journey and our role is to build their skills and resilience to support a successful transition to a new school and to work closely with receiving schools and parents/carers.
The Gateway is part of the wider SEND Support Service in Coventry within, the Social, Emotional Mental Health and Learning Team (SEMH L)

What is the job role?
This is a full-time post with UPS, SEN 1 or 2 depending on experience plus a TLR 2a.
This is an exciting opportunity to help lead and develop a committed staff team to:
- advocate for and support pupils
- deliver high quality personalised support
- work closely with parent /carers
- Work in partnership with schools, health, social care and education services as a team around the child.
You will
- Provide leadership and day to day running of the service
- Have excellent interpersonal skills and strong personal resilience
- Have leadership experience in a school or educational setting
- Be an excellent classroom practitioner
- Have high aspirations for pupils and staff.
- Have some teaching commitment
This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
Who are we looking for?
You’ll need:
- To enable clear, sensitive and empathetic relationships to be developed and maintained with children, parents and professionals
- To advise, coach and mentor on holistic programmes of support for pupils
- To use, and encourage the use of, a solution focussed approach in working with children, families, schools and other agencies.
You should have significant experience as a classroom teacher, including demonstrable experience of teaching vulnerable children experiencing SEMH difficulties, leadership experience gained in a school or setting is desirable. You must be a qualified teacher.
