The Adult Education Service is part of Coventry City Council. We provide a wide range of courses for Coventry residents age 19+ and much of our provision is targeted at people with the highest levels of need.
We offer long courses in English, maths, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), ICT/Digital and vocational subjects such as Early Years, along with provision for adults with learning disabilities.
We also offer a very wide range of short community courses in arts, crafts, music, dance, exercise, fitness and family learning. In addition, we run a highly supportive study programme for young people.
Our work-based learning offer includes Apprenticeships in the following subject areas:
- Nursery Workers
- Teaching Assistants
- Leadership/Management; and
- Customer Care.
We also provide courses for adults who are seeking work via the Council’s Job Shop.
Our main base is at Southfields Old School, CV1 5EJ, with provision delivered at around 25 other sites within Coventry, mostly in areas of highest need.

What is the job role?
This is a fixed-term role initially until 31 March 2025, with a possible extension until 31 July 2025 subject to grant conditions. The role is to plan, facilitate and deliver a range of Family Learning programmes as part of the Best Start for Life Project (Home Learning Environment), in order to:
- champion the best possible educational outcomes for vulnerable children in the Early Years, in order to reduce inequality of outcomes.
- support parents to gain confidence and knowledge to facilitate early learning and child development in the family environment
Project activities will support achievement of the vision of the Best Start for Life Programme, through delivery of the home learning environment strand https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/family-hubs-and-start-for-life-programme
This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
Who are we looking for?
The Adult Education Service is looking for an experienced educational improvement professional to deliver outputs and outcomes relating to home learning environment family learning activities as part of a Department for Education funded Best Start for Life programme.
You will need an up to date knowledge of the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage), understanding of the needs and characteristics of children and their families and effective practice in relation to the home learning environment, and an ability to use a range of evidence-based interventions to effect change with children and families with evidence of impact.
You will need evidence ability to plan and prepare sessions for groups of adults and groups of parents and children age 0 to 5, using a range of teaching and learning strategies, as well as the ability to work in partnership with parents to facilitate a positive home learning environment.
Following recommendations from Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) for an additional pre employment check with effect 1 Sept 22, please note, an online search may form part of this recruitment process.
