Sustainability Officer

Coventry City Council | Sustainability Team

Grade: 7

Are you passionate about sustainability and making a real difference to the future of Coventry?

We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic Sustainability Officer to join our Sustainability Team and play a key role in delivering Coventry's ambitious Climate Action Plan.

At Coventry City Council, we are committed to creating a greener, healthier and more sustainable city for everyone. We are looking for someone who shares this ambition and can help turn our environmental priorities into meaningful action that benefits our residents, communities and businesses.

This is a fantastic opportunity to be involved in a diverse range of high-profile sustainability projects, working collaboratively with colleagues, partners and communities to deliver positive and lasting change.

What is the job role?

As a Sustainability Officer, you will play an important role in supporting the delivery of Coventry's Climate Action Plan, helping to reduce carbon emissions, tackle fuel poverty, improve environmental outcomes and strengthen the city's resilience to climate change.

A key responsibility will be leading the delivery of the Warm Homes Local Grant programme, working alongside colleagues and our Strategic Energy Partner, E.ON, to support improvements to the energy efficiency of homes across Coventry.

You will also contribute to a range of other exciting sustainability initiatives, including community energy, community growing, tackling green inequalities through Green for All, creation of Brandon Wood Nature Reserve and delivery of the city's Adaptation and Resilience Plan.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and coordinating sustainability projects, ensuring they are delivered effectively, on time and within available resources.
  • Leading the delivery of the Warm Homes Local Grant programme, helping residents benefit from improved home energy efficiency and reduced fuel poverty.
  • Identifying external funding opportunities, preparing funding bids and supporting the effective management of grant-funded programmes.
  • Working with residents, community organisations, businesses and partners to encourage participation in climate action.
  • Monitoring project performance, managing risks and budgets, and reporting on progress and outcomes.
  • Supporting communications, events and engagement activities that promote sustainability across the city.
  • Building strong working relationships across the Council and with regional and national partners to share good practice and identify new opportunities.

This is a varied and rewarding role where you will have the opportunity to contribute directly to projects that make a difference to people's lives and the environment.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for someone who is proactive, organised and passionate about sustainability, with the ability to manage projects, build effective relationships and deliver results.

You will have:

  • A good understanding of sustainability, climate change and environmental challenges, particularly those affecting urban communities.
  • Experience of coordinating or delivering projects, managing competing priorities and meeting deadlines.
  • Knowledge of external funding opportunities, including developing funding applications and managing grant-funded programmes.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Excellent organisational skills, with the confidence to use your own initiative and work independently.
  • Good analytical and ICT skills, including experience of using data to monitor progress and support reporting.
  • A degree, equivalent qualification or substantial relevant experience.

Above all, we are looking for someone who is enthusiastic about making a positive contribution, enjoys working collaboratively and can help us deliver our sustainability ambitions for Coventry.

Why join us?

By joining Coventry City Council, you will become part of a dedicated and supportive team working on some of the city's most important environmental priorities.

You will have the opportunity to work on meaningful projects, develop your professional experience and collaborate with a wide range of partners to help shape a more sustainable future for Coventry.

We are committed to our One Coventry values, creating an inclusive workplace where everyone is respected, supported and encouraged to achieve their potential.

If you are ready to help drive forward Coventry's sustainability ambitions, we would love to hear from you.
