About the team we are recruiting to

The Adult Education Service is part of Coventry City Council.  We provide a wide range of courses for Coventry residents age 19+ and much of our provision is targeted at people with the highest levels of need. 

We offer long courses in English, maths, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), ICT/Digital and vocational subjects such as Early Years, along with provision for adults with learning disabilities.  

We also offer a very wide range of short community courses in arts, crafts, music, dance, exercise, fitness and family learning.  In addition, we run a highly supportive study programme for young people.

Our work-based learning offer includes Apprenticeships in the following subject areas: 

  • Nursery Workers
  • Teaching Assistants
  • Leadership/Management; and 
  • Customer Care. 

We also provide courses for adults who are seeking work via the Council’s Job Shop. 

Our main base is at Southfields Old School, CV1 5EJ, with provision delivered at around 25 other sites within Coventry, mostly in areas of highest need.

What is the job role?

Senior Curriculum & Operations Manager

Coventry City Council’s highly successful Adult Education Service is seeking an experienced curriculum leader who will make a significant contribution to the strategic leadership and operational management of the service.

As a member of the Service’s Senior Leadership Team (SLT), the person appointed will be responsible for the overall leadership and management of a range of curriculum areas and service wide functions including marketing and curriculum planning.

They will contribute to establishing an ambitious vision for the future of the service and communicating that vision to staff, learners and other stakeholders. In addition, they will work with colleagues across the Council's Employment and Skills team to develop effective links with relevant funding organisations, education and training providers, and other agencies that support adults in Coventry to develop their employability and life skills.

Key responsibilities of this role are leading the service's Equality, Diversity and Inclusion agenda and promoting a culture of inclusion within the service where all views are valued and taken account of, including those of learners, staff, stakeholders and the City Council.

This is a full-time, permanent role.

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Who are we looking for?

Applicants must have recent, relevant and successful team/service leadership experience within an Adult Education setting, covering a range of curriculum types including Skills funded and Community Learning courses.

The person appointed will be able to demonstrate how they have made a significant contribution to service vision, strategy and inclusive curriculum planning that attracts learners from diverse backgrounds and communities with highest needs. They will have a strong understanding of how the acquisition of employability and life skills through Adult Education can raise aspirations and make a difference to people's lives. 

They will also have substantial knowledge and understanding of relevant funding streams and experience of developing strategies, policies and procedures, and bid writing in an Adult Education setting. They will have managed cross-service functions such as Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, and Safeguarding.

The successful applicant will have extensive experience of successful liaison with community-based organisations and other agencies and services, along with experience of managing the promotion of adult education provision using a range of methods, including social media.

They will also have successful experience of managing, motivating and inspiring staff and/or developing the practice of others, including organising staff development, induction and performance management. The person appointed will have the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to a range of audiences.

You will hold Qualified Teacher Status and/or other relevant high level professional qualification(s), with evidence of continuous professional development relevant to the role.
