We are a dynamic Financial Management Team responsible for providing a diverse range of functions to drive the Council to fulfil its transformational journey.   We deliver the full range of financial management and accounting services to facilitate effective delivery of services to support the people of Coventry and deliver projects which are redefining the infrastructure of the city.

Working flexibly with internal officers and external partners we aim to ensure finance is at the heart of everything that the Council does.

What is the job role?

Are you confident and experienced in providing financial support and accounting advice to senior managers? Are you able to work effectively with many stakeholders towards achieving organisational goals?

An excellent opportunity has arisen to join the School Finance Team on a permanent, part time, basis. We are looking for an individual with sound technical and numerical ability together with strong communication and interpersonal skills, to work within a challenging customer focussed environment.

The role will be varied and involves providing financial support to schools, including advice to Head Teachers and supporting all elements associated with the annual financial cycle.

The main duties and responsibilities of this role include:

  • Supporting a portfolio of schools with the preparation of financial management information, including setting and monitoring in year budgets as well as multi-year forecasts;
  • Working with a variety of stakeholders within both the Council and Coventry schools;
  • Ensuring the accuracy and completeness of financial information in schools through analysis and challenge;
  • Providing robust financial modeling and analysis;
  • Undertaking assurance reviews on processes and procedures;
  • Assisting schools to complete and submit statutory financial returns;
  • Reconciliation of school and Council information for statutory reporting.

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Who are we looking for?

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with an AAT qualification or significant experience in a school financial environment who is looking for a part time (30 hours over 4 days per week position).

You will need to demonstrate a good understanding of accounting principles and prioritisation of workloads as well as excellent interpersonal skills.  You will also need to engage with people at all levels to achieve appropriate outcomes. You will excel in numerical, analytical and problem-solving skills and have a strong ability to produce, analyse and use financial data.

The ability to work under your own initiative, use judgement, tact and decisiveness while working to deliver a first class financial and customer service against a backdrop of changing priorities is required.

  • Demonstrate your written and oral communication skills to include production and presentation of financial information and reports for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • What experience you have in effectively prioritising and planning workloads
  • Demonstrate your ability to understand, interpret and apply relevant financial procedures rules and legislation ensuring proper practices are followed
  • Able to manage challenging dialogues whilst maintaining professional customer relationships.
