The Education Service strives to deliver outstanding services for our customers, the children and young people of Coventry, including those who may be requiring access to education or alternative education provision. We ensure vulnerable children are appropriately supported; have a voice, that hopefully leads to their high achievement and excellent progress. The service is made up of a diverse range of teams all working together to recognise, support and apply innovative solutions to address the growing issues in relation to trying to educate some of our most vulnerable pupils in schools

The Outdoor Education Service delivers high quality learning and outdoor experiences to the children and young people of Coventry. It also upskills a range of educational practitioners in a variety of outdoor education courses and apprenticeships.

We currently offer a high quality, residential outdoor education programme to Coventry schools through our outdoor centre at Plas Dol-y-Moch in North Wales. They are an exceptional team, including qualified teachers delivering first-class education through the medium of the outdoors in a residential setting.

We want more children and young people to benefit from Outdoor Learning and Activity and are therefore expanding our service further through developing a high quality ‘In City’ provision. This will protect the long-term viability of the service and ensure that more children and young people have access to outdoor learning and adventure.

What is the job role?

The successful candidate will be a member of the Coventry Outdoors staff team, delivering a new and innovative Level 5 Outdoor Education Specialist Apprenticeship, based at Coombe Abbey, with visits to partner schools within the West Midlands Combined Authority. The successful candidate will lead on the management and quality improvement of specific Outdoor Education Apprenticeship courses citywide and lead in the planning, co-ordination and quality improvement of the appropriate curriculum areas and programme.

The main areas of responsibilities are:

  • Deliver a range of Courses, Awards and Qualifications for the service and specific qualifications related to the particular apprenticeship standard.
  • Provide tutorial support including key training for the apprentice’s (and Employer around Prevent and British Values), Personal Development, Behaviour and Welfare, Safeguarding and any additional learning support requirements
  • Appropriately support and engage adult learners to ensure all learners succeed whilst undertaking all necessary preparation activities relating to the learning programme.
  • Assess skills and behaviours and feedback to learners using the e-Portfolio system and act as a mentor for groups of adult learners, maintaining course files, appropriate learner records and undertaking administrative tasks relating to the course or programme including enrolment duties.

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). 

Who are we looking for?

We seek an appropriately qualified, experienced, enthusiastic, and highly organised individual with a proven track record of working with children, young people and adults in an outdoor educational setting.

The successful candidate must be qualified, highly skilled and knowledgeable within Bushcraft, Woodland Activity, and Outdoor Learning and will hold a Level 3 (or above) teaching qualification along with a subject specialism qualification in Bushcraft or Forest School.

We require a well qualified candidate who is skilled in tutoring and mentoring adult learners, supporting them throughout their learning journey. We seek a skilled practitioner who can manage learning environments and can use assessment and observation processes to ensure adult learners achieve and thrive in a variety of qualifications. 

The successful candidate needs to be energetic, hardworking and enjoy working as part of a team. You will be highly organised in the practical delivery, tutoring and administration of the apprenticeship cohorts.
