About the team we are recruiting to

The Employment & Skills Service is part of Coventry City Council.  We work with a range of delivery partners to provide a wide portfolio of top quality support to Coventry residents of all ages who are looking for work.  We work with partners across the city and our Employer Hub actively works with local employers to generate opportunities for local people.

Our friendly and welcoming Job Shop is situated in Coventry City Centre. We are here to support all Coventry residents to search for employment, training, apprenticeships and work placements.  People can explore a wide range of local vacancies that are updated daily and access training opportunities.

We also provide ground-breaking specialist support for local residents who face multiple and sometimes complex barriers that make it hard for them to find a job.  The Job Shop and our exciting range of specialist employment support programmes are among the very best support available in the UK

What is the job role?

Supported by the European Social Fund 2014-2020

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Employment and Skills Service and be part of the Connect2 ESF funded programme which has been set up to ensure that Coventry residents receive high quality and personalised support to enable them to move closer to and into good quality employment.

This role involves working with individuals who experience mental health difficulties, including more common conditions such as depression and anxiety through to people experiencing more severe mental ill health.

We have joined forces with Rethink Mental Illness’s Employment Service in Coventry and developed an exciting partnership with the aim of increasing employment opportunities for people experiencing mental health difficulties. You will be co located with colleagues at Rethink and your role will include:

  • identifying people who would like support through Connect2 to pursue their employment aspirations and then working with individuals on a 1:1 basis to achieve this.
  • Maintaining accurate records to meet ESF requirements, preparing claim documents, checking evidence and supporting management to ensure that ESF targets are monitored and achieved.

Working with individuals, health professionals and employers you will be responsible for carrying out employment focused assessments and then working with each person to create a clear plan of action which will enable the individual to move closer to and into education/training or good quality and sustainable employment.

You will be responsible for sourcing and then working with employers to develop good quality opportunities which match the education, training and employment aspirations of the people you are supporting. You will also ensure that individuals and employers receive the appropriate support and guidance to succeed, linking with other professionals and services where appropriate. It is important that you have an understanding of the Individual Placement and Support (IPS) Model as defined by the Centre for Mental Health as this is the approach you will be using to support individuals.

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Who are we looking for?

You will need to be excellent at developing positive working relationships, an effective communicator able to work with a wide range of people and crucially have the skills and ability to negotiate with employers across a wide range of sectors.

You will also need to have good self-management skills, flexibility and the ability to meet challenging but highly rewarding targets. The ability to work remotely and possess excellent IT skills is essential as we adapt to provide support in different ways during these changing and challenging times.

Flexibility is key, as the role is peripatetic and will require access to individuals virtually or through centres, so experience coordinating and managing a mixed diverse caseload either 1:1 or in safe groups is necessary.

If you are dynamic, creative, able to use your initiative and believe that you have the drive and skills to be able to make a real difference to the lives of people experiencing mental health difficulties then we want to hear from you.

This is a 37 hour per week fixed term contract untill March 2023. However, we hope to secure additional funding to extend the post beyond this date.

You will be employed by Coventry City Council as a Mental Health Employment Coach and will be working on the Connect2  Programme which is part funded by the European Social Fund.
