About the team we are recruiting to

The Adult Education Service is part of Coventry City Council. We provide a wide range of courses for Coventry residents age 19+ and much of our provision is targeted at people with the highest levels of need.

We offer long courses in English, maths, ESOL, ICT/Digital and vocational subjects such as Early Years, along with provision for adults with learning disabilities. We also offer a very wide range of short community courses in arts, crafts, music, dance, exercise, fitness and Family Learning. In addition, we run a highly supportive Study Programme for young people.

Our work based learning offer includes Apprenticeships in the following: Nursery Workers, Teaching Assistants, Leadership/Management and Customer Care. We also provide courses for adults who are seeking work via the Council’s Job Shop.

Our main base is at Southfields Old School, CV1 5EJ, with provision delivered at around 25 other sites within Coventry, mostly in areas of highest need.

What is the job role?

Are you an experienced and enthusiastic tutor/manager who is looking for an exciting opportunity to join our committed and experienced English team?

The successful candidates will teach within our programme of courses that lead to Functional Skills or GCSE certification. We also meet the needs of some learners by offering stepping stone qualifications or progression through ILP target achievement. You will lead teams of staff for IAG, assessment and enrolments.

You will lead a team of Level 1 English lecturers and support staff, and efficiently manage the English programme in a number of venues. You will work with the existing Level 2 lecturers and partner organisations, in order to ensure the ongoing, high quality of the English programme citywide. Classes run during the day and evenings, and you may be required to work up to 2 evenings a week, depending on programme and Service need. We deliver classes within Apprenticeship and Study Programmes that are delivered outside of school term dates.

Due to the restrictions in place because of Covid-19, we are planning to hold interviews online.

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for candidates who are dynamic educators, with proven success in working with learners across a wide range of abilities and committed to continuous quality improvement.

You will need to have current knowledge of the English curriculum and qualifications for post-16 learners, experience of delivering learning through both classroom and online platforms, flexibility within the working environment and be able to respond quickly to the demands of the programme and the Service.

In your personal statement, please evidence skills and knowledge in the subject and person specifications, particularly addressing the following:

  • demonstrate your ability to develop and deliver flexible learning programmes to meet both group and individual needs
  • give examples of how you strive to constantly improve your quality of teaching, learning and assessment and your ability to respond to significant changes in the sector
  • explain how you have worked with, and/or lead, others to achieve a specific successful outcome for learners

Minimum qualifications: QTS/QTLS (level 5 Literacy subject specialism) and certification of level 3, or higher, in English and level 2 in maths.
