About the team we are recruiting to

The Adult Education Service is part of Coventry City Council.  We provide a wide range of courses for Coventry residents age 19+ and much of our provision is targeted at people with the highest levels of need. 

We offer long courses in English, maths, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), ICT/Digital and vocational subjects such as Early Years, along with provision for adults with learning disabilities.  

We also offer a very wide range of short community courses in arts, crafts, music, dance, exercise, fitness and family learning.  In addition, we run a highly supportive study programme for young people.

Our work-based learning offer includes Apprenticeships in the following subject areas: 

• Nursery Workers
• Teaching Assistants
• Leadership/Management; and 
• Customer Care. 

We also provide courses for adults who are seeking work via the Council’s Job Shop. 

Our main base is at Southfields Old School, CV1 5EJ, with provision delivered at around 25 other sites within Coventry, mostly in areas of highest need.

What is the job role?

This is an opportunity for appropriately qualified and skilled candidates to join the enthusiastic, committed and experienced Coventry Adult Education Service ESOL team.  We deliver high quality, accredited and non accredited ESOL programmes to men and women from a range of cultural backgrounds across Coventry in the morning, afternoon and evening.

We have 2 part time (0.6) fixed term contracts until July 2024 for learning support assistants to support adult ESOL learners on a year-round ESOL programme for recent arrivals to the city.

Salary will be pro rata to the number of hours worked.

You will work closely with the tutor(s) and manager in order to give additional support to learners in classes in order to help them to improve their English, integrate into the city and prepare them for employment. 

The programme will not follow the school year and will continue to run during the school holidays but there is a generous holiday allowance which can be taken at other agreed times of the year.

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Who are we looking for?

Flexibility and the ability to support in classes during the school holidays are essential.  Experience of working within mixed level groups, supporting learners learning to read and write and working with recent arrivals to the UK would be an advantage.

Following recommendations from Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) for an additional pre employment check with effect 1 Sept 22, please note, an online search may form part of this recruitment process.
