The Adult Education Service is part of Coventry City Council.  We provide a wide range of courses for Coventry residents age 19+ and much of our provision is targeted at people with the highest levels of need. 

We offer long courses in English, maths, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), ICT/Digital and vocational subjects such as Early Years, along with provision for adults with learning disabilities.  

We also offer a very wide range of short community courses in arts, crafts, music, dance, exercise, fitness and family learning.  In addition, we run a highly supportive study programme for young people.

Our work-based learning offer includes Apprenticeships in the following subject areas: 

  • Nursery Workers
  • Teaching Assistants
  • Leadership/Management; and 
  • Customer Care. 

We also provide courses for adults who are seeking work via the Council’s Job Shop. 

Our main base is at Southfields Old School, CV1 5EJ, with provision delivered at around 25 other sites within Coventry, mostly in areas of highest need.

What is the job role?

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Lead Tutor to join our Life Skills Family Learning team. Working closely with the Delivery Manager, you will enable high-quality teaching and learning, ensuring that both learners and staff receive the highest standards of support. This key leadership role will promote strong positive relationships within families, enabling parents and carers to support their children’s learning and development. 

 

Family Learning deliver a range of provision across the city including one-off workshops and longer programmes (e.g. 10-week courses). Our sessions can be parent / carer only, or intergenerational (parent and child). Currently our provision include:

  • Parenting and relational programmes 
  • Focused pre-school sessions 
  • Baby massage 
  • Curriculum-based sessions to support understanding of early years and primary education 
  • Developing programmes such as early communication, art-based learning, and outdoor learning 

 

What you’ll do

  • Shape the Curriculum: Contribute to curriculum design, development and continuous improvement, to ensure engaging and impactful teaching and learning across Family Learning.
  • Manage and Coordinate:  Inspire staff to deliver high quality learning sessions that ensure compliance with funding requirements. 
  • Quality Assurance: Support staff to ensure learners progress confidently toward goals. Contribute to quality assurance, continuous improvement, and programme development.
  • Innovate:  Adapt to diverse environments and promote inclusion. Understand barriers to learning for Coventry parents, engage disadvantaged families and increase participation from male carers. 
  • Lead and Deliver: Plan, teach, and monitor engaging learning sessions that make a real impact, working across Coventry in schools and community venues. Develop and maintain effective partnership with local organisations. 
  • Support and Mentor: Line manage and support the development of the staff team. Mentor and coach colleagues to enhance teaching practice and learner outcomes.

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

 

All candidates must have the Right to Work in the UK. We are currently not offering sponsorship for this role.

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking an enthusiastic, adaptable, and committed team player with experience of working with children and/or families in educational or community settings. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of the barriers adults may face in education, and a genuine commitment to supporting learners to overcome these challenges. 

You will either possess, or be willing to develop, an understanding of the Early Years or Primary curriculum. You should be confident in delivering learning sessions, preparing appropriate resources, and supporting individual learner needs to enable progress. 

Strong communication and organisational skills are required, along with a willingness to engage in, and to deliver, ongoing professional development. You must be committed to promoting equality, diversity, and safeguarding in all aspects of your work.
