About the team we are recruiting to

The Employment & Skills Service is part of Coventry City Council.  We work with a range of delivery partners to provide a wide portfolio of top quality support to Coventry residents of all ages who are looking for work.  We work with partners across the city and our Employer Hub actively works with local employers to generate opportunities for local people. 

Our friendly and welcoming Job Shop is situated in Coventry City Centre. We are here to support all Coventry residents to search for employment, training, apprenticeships and work placements.  People can explore a wide range of local vacancies that are updated daily and access training opportunities.  

We also provide ground-breaking specialist support for local residents who face multiple and sometimes complex barriers that make it hard for them to find a job.  The Job Shop and our exciting range of specialist employment support programmes are among the very best support available in the UK

This is an amazing opportunity to join Coventry’s Pathways to Employment Team and be part of our expanding Supported Internship programme, transforming the lives of young people with special educational needs and disabilities by enabling individuals to realise their potential and progress towards and into paid employment.

The Pathways to Employment Team is part of the Employment and Skills Service, which includes our Adult Education Service. We work in partnership with the Council’s SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) Team to ensure that our residents have choice and control, good quality support and the opportunity to progress through a range of employment pathways. We support individuals with learning disabilities, autism/neurodiverse, physical disabilities and other people who also face major barriers when it comes to gaining employment.

Your role will be to support individuals to access employment related opportunities and become independent in their roles and provide the necessary coaching, training and encouragement to enable them to succeed. This will include getting to know each individual, helping to match them to the right opportunities and then providing them with on-the-job training and support in the workplace. You will also liaise with the young person’s family, education provider and other people involved in their life to ensure that the support you provide is tailored to the young person’s needs.

You will work closely with employers to identify and create opportunities and ensure that they are supported and can confidently manage, train and support customers once your support has been faded and withdrawn. This will involve working with intern’s workplace colleagues to help them to develop the skills and confidence they need, identifying the various tasks that make up the role and working with the employer to develop a training plan. You will carry out regular monitoring visits and reviews to ensure that placements are going well and that individuals are progressing.

What is a Supported Internship?

A Supported Internships is a structured learning programme based with an employer. They enable young people aged 16-24 with an EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan) to achieve sustainable paid employment by equipping individuals with the skills they need for work through learning in a real working environment matched to their interests and aspirations.

We are working in partnership with various major employers, special schools, Adult Education and colleges to offer a wide range of opportunities to the young people of Coventry.

The Pathways to Employment Team operates in line with the Supported Employment Model (please see attached information sheet). Training and support will be provided but you should have an understanding of the approach and how this differs from traditional models of work readiness.

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

You will be an excellent communicator who is approachable, outgoing and able to communicate with a wide range of people. You will be confident in and enjoy adapting to various work settings and be able to work effectively on your own initiative and as part of a team.

You will be able to work flexibly, travelling to different locations and it may occasionally involve early starts, late finishes or working at weekends depending on the support needs of your customers and employers.

You will be involved in agreeing and setting up support so will have advance notice of when flexible working will be required.
