Higher Learning Teaching Assistant (Hospital School)
Our Values
In line with our One Coventry Values, we want to ensure that our communities are represented across our workforce. A vital part of this is ensuring we are a truly inclusive organisation that encourages diversity in all respects, including diversity of thinking. We particularly welcome applicants from minority ethnic, LGBT+, disabled and neurodiverse communities to make a real difference to our residents so that equity and respect remains at the heart of everything we do.
Our Values are:
- Open and fair: We are fair, open, and transparent.
- Nurture and develop: We help and encourage everyone to be their best and do their best.
- Engage and empower: We talk and listen to others, working together as one.
- Create and innovate: We embrace new ways of working to continuously improve.
- Own and be accountable: We work together to deliver the best services for our residents.
- Value and respect: We put diversity and inclusion at the heart of all we do.

About the team we are recruiting to
We value diverse perspectives and experiences and are striving to create a workplace culture that is inclusive, is accepting of all and is free from discrimination and bias.
The Education Entitlement Service (EES) strives to deliver outstanding services for our customers, predominately the children of Coventry, who may be requiring access to education or alternative education provision. We ensure vulnerable children are appropriately supported; have a voice, that hopefully leads to their high achievement and excellent progress.
The EES is made up of a diverse range of teams all working together to recognise, support and apply innovative solutions to address the growing issues in relation to trying to educate some of our most vulnerable pupils in schools.
Inspired Pathways provides education for pupils from age 4-16 years, some of whom are taught on the Children’s Ward within the local large general hospital; others aged 11-16 years are taught at Whitmore Park Annexe or on home tuition.
What is the job role?
This HLTA role will not require you to have an in-depth knowledge of the KS3 and KS4 curriculum, as the teaching and detailed marking is provided by specialist teachers who come to teach on the hospital wards for half-day sessions. The HLTA provides continuity for both Secondary-aged pupils and teachers. The role involves the rapid forging of relationships with pupils (and sometimes their parents/carers) and sharing their knowledge of pupils’ medical, emotional and learning needs with the visiting teachers. The successful candidate will also provide wellbeing activities for pupils who are medically too unwell for structured work, whether for reasons of physical or mental health. The appointed HLTA will also work one-to-one with pupils with SLD (Severe Learning Difficulties) and support colleagues in providing singing and sensory sessions for pupils with PMLD (Pervasive and Multiple Learning Difficulties). A willingness to adapt and learn is essential; the right candidate can be trained in any areas in which they are inexperienced.
In addition to the visiting Secondary teachers, your colleagues will be a (we would say ‘small but wonderful!’) team of two who are permanently based at the hospital – a Primary teacher who oversees both the Primary and Secondary teaching in the hospital school and a Primary-based HLTA, along with many friendly NHS staff.
Working hours 8.30am – 2.45pm (Lunch break 12-1pm)
Who are we looking for?
Do you enjoy working with a wide range of young people to support them during what can be a challenging time in their lives? Are you an excellent communicator who can forge relationships quickly and work proactively? If so, we would love to hear from you!
We are seeking an HLTA to support children and young people on the wards in hospital. This will predominantly involve working with Secondary aged pupils. However, a Primary or special school practitioner may well be suitable for the role.
Visits to the hospital are warmly encouraged so that prospective candidates can get a clearer insight into our unique learning setting and the HLTA role.
This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
All candidates must have the Right to Work in the UK. We are currently not offering sponsorship for this role.
Interview date: Thursday 15th January 2026
