Facilities Apprentice - Castle Wood School

What is the job role?

Fixed term 24 months apprenticeship

Castle Wood is seeking to appoint a Facilities Apprentice to assist our Site Services Officer with the day to day routine maintenance, cleaning duties and smooth running of our school site.  Castle Wood is an outstanding special needs primary school based in Coventry.  In this role, you will complete a Property Maintenance Operative apprenticeship level 2 which is expected to take 24 months to complete. 

The successful candidate will:

• Be responsible for the security of the buildings and grounds including routine and non-routine opening of the premises and setting of alarms.

• Ensure that the whole site is kept free of all litter and rubbish, gutters are cleared. 

• Work with the Site Services Officer in managing all repairs and maintenance needed outside of this job description, progress chasing and reporting on delays to the Site Services Officer / Business Manager.

• Under the supervision of the Site Services Officer support the operation of the heating plant, maintain required temperatures and the availability of an adequate supply of hot water.

• With training and development you will be responsible for minor repair and maintenance work, including: carpentry, decorating and plumbing.

• To ensure an adequate stock of essential items and safe maintenance and control of equipment for the role.  This includes receiving deliveries and distributing to the appropriate area/storage.

• Monitor fire safety and carry out fire alarm testing.

• Undertake cleaning of areas as required, without encroaching on allocated time required for your monitoring and handy person duties.  Replenishing consumable premises supplied around school.

• Carry out procedures in the event of emergencies and provide assistance in dealing with general enquiries relating to the use of the site.

• Undertake necessary statutory checks including but not limited to play equipment, legionella flushing, panic alarms, ladders, fire doors etc)

• Supporting with maintenance and cleaning of the hydrotherapy pool.

• To keep paths, steps, walkways, etc., free of snow and ice, using and ordering salt and grit as necessary.

• Take actions to prevent trespass on the premises.

• Moving equipment and resources as required and setting up hall as directed.

• To undertake work during school holidays as defined by the Site Services Officer.

• To carry out any other relevant duties as requested.

Who are we looking for?

You will have an interest in property maintenance and services and be keen to develop the relevant skills to support this.  You will take pride in how our Castle Wood looks and ensure that the premises are kept safe. 

The successful candidate will possess strong communication and organisational skills.  You will be practical and adaptable and able to work shifts.  You will have good working knowledge of IT packages include Microsoft Office, Outlook, Teams

You will be a strong team player whilst also being able to work on your own initiative and work independently.  You will have a good level of physical fitness and knowledge of health and safety basics.  You will be able to listen and take instructions and be flexible.

Qualifications we desire are GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths at Grade A* - C/Grade 4 – 9.

Shift pattern: 37 hours flexible shifts to meet the needs of the school anytime between 7am-6pm inc 30 minutes unpaid lunch Break.
