The Family Drug and Alcohol Court (FDAC) serves as a problem-solving court that assesses parents and provides intensive interventions through a multidisciplinary team. This team utilises trauma-informed and relationship-based approaches for parents whose children are involved in care proceedings due to substance misuse affecting their parenting. The professionals work directly with parents to help them address these challenges within timeframes that align with the child's needs, ultimately supporting timely and stable permanency outcomes for the child.  

Coventry FDAC is a well-established and a nationally recognised team for innovative practice within the public sector. The specialist multi-disciplinary FDAC team has developed and refined its knowledge of working with parental substance misuse. The Team’s combined skills and expertise offer an accessible and holistic approach to parent/s to overcome their difficulties  and achieve abstinence. The Two elements of the intervention are – Can the parent overcome their difficulties in the timeframe for the child and can they provide safe enough care 

What is the job role?

FDAC is seeking to recruit a Parental Substance Misuse Worker. We invite applicants with expertise in substance misuse, experience in assessment and intervention, or knowledge of Hidden Harms who are motivated to create meaningful change.

In this position, you will collaborate within a multidisciplinary team to assess families and provide interventions. You will work in partnership with families, empowering them to achieve and maintain positive behavioural changes.

As a Key Worker responsible for case management, you will coordinate and plan comprehensive family support, including assisting parents involved in care proceedings due to substance misuse. You will conduct assessments and provide tailored support to parents whose children are subject to these proceedings. Reporting back directly to the FDAC Judge and the Court as agents or change .

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
  All candidates must have the Right to Work in the UK. We are currently not offering sponsorship for this role.

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking someone who is passionate about making a difference for families. The ideal candidate will have experience with parenting programs and direct work with parents to deliver interventions, as well as a strong understanding of children's needs through observation, teaching, and modelling positive parenting.

Are you confident working with complex situations where parents face substance abuse, trauma, lifestyle challenges, and relationship difficulties? Do you possess assessment skills and the ability to write statements and reports for the Court?  Confident to work collaborate with the FDAC team , child’s social worker , Guardian   and wider professionals. If so, we would be pleased to receive your application.

In your personal statement, please evidence skills and knowledge in the subject and person specifications, particularly addressing the following, applications will be shortlisted against these points:

  • Demonstrate your knowledge of  undertaking assessments that are focussed on the individual’s substance misuse and how this impacts their capacity to parent .
  • Experience of interpreting and analysing Drug and Alcohol tests  results and providing advice on what constitutes complex and polysubstance misuse  and harm reduction .
  • Ability to formulate and write assessments and reports.
