This post is situated within the Property Licencing & Housing Enforcement Team. We deal with all aspects of housing enforcement and licensing relating to houses in multiple occupation (HMOs).

The department is forward thinking, ambitious and prepared to robustly enforce current and new legislation. We’re determined to raise standards within properties and ensure the residents of Coventry live in safe healthy homes.

  • We were the 1st council in the country to issue a financial penalty under the new MEES Regulations
  • We’ve obtained banning orders against rogue landlords

We are based in the brand new One Friargate office building, within the City Centre and we’re embracing flexible working practices. We expect you to spend just one day per month in the office with your colleagues on our “office day”. You can live anywhere in the UK. You may decide to arrange all your inspections over the course of one or two days in Coventry and spend three days at home for example.

What is the job role?

We are looking for two Environmental Health Officers who enjoy enforcing the law and want to help make a difference to HMO dwellings in the city. As part of this role, you will:

  • Inspect HMOs prior to grant or refusal of a licence
  • Undertake compliance inspections for licensed HMOs
  • Investigate complaints of disrepair or offences
  • Serve enforcement notices
  • Investigate and commence legal proceedings against suspects

Who are we looking for?

Are you an Environmental Health graduate with no work experience in a council, or are you an Environmental Health student graduating soon? Apply now! If hired, you can expect an immediate starting salary of £34,723. 

Or are you an experienced Environmental Health Officer and frustrated by an enforcement-averse culture at your council? Is there a lack of a clear processes which lead to legal action? Coventry City Council gives you the autonomy and support to robustly enforce the law and carry out punitive measures against rogue landlords. The decision to take civil action such as making an entry to the rogue landlord database, banning orders, licence revocation and financial penalty notices is delegated to the team, and you can expect full support from management.

We are looking for:

  • Environmental Health students who are graduating soon
  • Environmental Health graduates with no experience
  • Enforcement Officers with an Environmental Health degree
  • Environmental Health Officers without EHRB Registration / CIEH Chartership
  • EHRB registered / CIEH chartered Environmental Health Officers

You should describe and provide an example of how you possess the knowledge, skills & abilities, qualifications, and experience that are necessary for this role. If you don’t have the experience, explain how you have the knowledge of that point.

You must have or be graduating in a CIEH accredited degree from a UK University.

International degrees in Environmental Health or equivalent are not accepted.
