About the team we are recruiting to

Coventry City Council’s Internal Audit Service are a small, self-motivated and adaptable Team responsible for providing independent assurance that the Council’s risk management, governance and internal control processes are operating effectively.  We also play a key role in delivering the Council’s Fraud and Corruption Strategy, leading on the Council’s participation in the National Fraud Initiative run by the Cabinet Office, undertaking corporate fraud investigations and carrying out proactive exercises to manage the risk of fraud and error.

Our quality improvement programme means that we are constantly looking at ways in which we can improve both what we do and how we do it, including extending our use of data analytics and working with third parties. 

Protecting the public purse is at the heart of everything we do to ensure Council funds are spent effectively and efficiently to deliver services to the citizens of Coventry.  We report the outcomes of our work to the Council’s Audit and Procurement Committee.

What is the job role?

Working to support the delivery of the Fraud and Corruption Strategy, the Internal Audit Team are looking for a proficient and enthusiastic Corporate Fraud and Error Officer to lead on our Revenues fraud and error workstream and other proactive exercises such as the National Fraud Initiative.  You will also play a lead role in undertaking and supporting other members of the Team in corporate fraud investigations and participate in the regional fraud forum to identify good practice in counter fraud work.   

You will collaborate with other members of the Internal Audit Team, the Revenues and Benefits Service and colleagues across the Council.  You will also have contact with members of the public, and other partners who we work with. 

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to the post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Who are we looking for?

This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious candidate wanting to advance their career in counter fraud activity and play a key role in shaping the future of the Internal Audit service.

You will have experience as a fraud investigator and / or knowledge of Council Tax / Benefits administration.  You will have excellent IT skills, including the ability to interrogate databases, and knowledge of key legislation such as the Data Protection Act.  You will have good analytical skills, be able to work on your own initiative and have the ability to juggle conflicting priorities, whilst meeting deadlines.

You will also have excellent communication skills and be able to deal effectively with members of the public. Equally as important, you will be self-motivated to assist in the on-going development of the Internal Audit Team, advancing your own skills and that of others.
