AGC members work alongside senior leaders and supporting teachers to provide excellent education to children. Being an AGC member (governor) is a commitment to attending Academy Governance Committee meetings as well as termly visits to school to assist with monitoring. AGC members are also involved in the school community, acting as critical friends to the headteacher and senior leaders. AGC members bring a wide range of skills and expertise from their professional lives to the committee and schools benefit greatly from working with volunteers with a variety of backgrounds.
AGC members (governors) have the following responsibilities:
• Provide support, monitoring and challenge around educational experience and performance
• Church, community, and stakeholder engagement

Personal qualities of an AGC member:

• A willingness and capacity to serve for four years.
• A willingness and capacity to learn.
Being an AGC member (school governor) is a chance to experience strategic leadership at any point in one’s career. The role provides individuals with the opportunity to develop and hone skills such as negotiation, influencing and teamwork. Volunteers need to be dedicated people who care about improving education, but they do not need prior governance or board experience. It makes the role perfect for professionals looking to improve their business and leadership skills, give back to society and enhance children’s futures.
