Coventry City Council’s Legal Service is part of the public sector providing in-house legal support to Coventry City Council. The team offers a professional comprehensive, tailor-made service to address legal issues of every description. The team is highly motivated, eager to develop and face challenges head on.
What is the job role?
The Corporate and Commercial Team in Coventry Legal Services is responsible for providing a wide range of commercial and property advice to the Council in respect of the Council’s day to day procurement and contractual matters along with the Council’s largest major project schemes. The successful candidate will manage a busy caseload including but not limited to contractual matters, funding agreements, collaboration agreements, provision of procurement and subsidy control advice and providing legal advice to the client departments, stakeholders and senior officers.
The Corporate and Commercial team is looking for a qualified and experienced Lawyer to join it as soon as possible. If successful, you will be part of a friendly and supportive team that deals with drafting and negotiating a range of commercial agreements and providing a range of advice on procurement law, state aid and contractual matters to various officers within the Council.
The work will be varied and shall include drafting and negotiating goods and services contracts, framework agreements, funding agreements, variation to existing contracts and collaboration agreements and providing a range of advice on procurement law, subsidy control and contractual matters.
Commercial Lawyers are regularly required to give advice on the legal risks of particular courses of action including procurement and subsidy control considerations. They are also regularly required to ensure that the Council in entering into any contractual arrangements are acting in adherence to the Council’s governance requirements. A knowledge of these areas would therefore be helpful in this role.
Your role will be to work closely with our existing Commercial Lawyers to manage a varied caseload effectively and to provide a high-quality legal service to our client departments, senior management and elected members.

As part of your role within the Corporate and Commercial Team you will have the opportunity to assist (with support) in the delivery of some of the major projects throughout the City which are the City’s strategic and highest value projects. Coventry City Council are proud to have delivered on some high value major projects in the last few years including the acquisitions of Coombe Abbey Hotel and Tom White Waste and the procurement and development of a multi million pound Materials Recycling Facility. Some highlights of current major projects in progress are the Very Light Rail project which is an innovative new form of transport and the City Centre Regeneration Project.

We occupy a modern building right by Coventry station so we are easily accessible by public transport. We will continue to embrace a mixture of both remote and office working as the Covid restrictions lift.
Who are we looking for?
We have a great opportunity for 2 Lawyers.
You will have the ability to deal with a demanding caseload, with excellent client care skills, and an eagerness to provide a high-quality legal service to our clients senior managers and elected members. You will be self-motivated and organised with a track record of meeting strict deadlines and timescales.
When applying for this role you will be asked to write a personal statement, when writing your personal statement please include/ demonstrate the following:
- A Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive (Fellow).
- Understanding of procurement law and state aid law relevant to a Local Authority.
- Dealing with a range of commercial matters including goods and services contracts, framework agreements, funding agreements, construction contracts and collaboration agreements and other associated agreements and documents.
- Experience of working with senior officers, elected members, including attendance relevant meetings and report writing .
- Knowledge and understanding of local government, administrative law and local authority governance.
