The Education Service strives to deliver outstanding services for our customers, predominately the children and young people of Coventry,  including those who may be requiring access to education or alternative education provision. We ensure vulnerable children are appropriately supported; have a voice, that hopefully leads to their high achievement and excellent progress. The service is made up of a diverse range of teams all working together to recognise, support and apply innovative solutions to address the growing issues in relation to trying to educate some of our most vulnerable pupils in schools

The Outdoor Education Service delivers high quality learning and outdoor experiences to the children and young people of Coventry.  

We currently offer a High quality, residential outdoor education programme to Coventry Schools through our outdoor centre at Plas Dol-y-Moch in North Wales. They are an exceptional team, including qualified teachers delivering first-class education through the medium of the outdoors in a residential setting.

We want more children and young people to benefit from Outdoor Learning and Activity and are therefore expanding our service further through developing a high quality ‘In City’ provision. This will protect the long-term viability of the service and ensure that more children and young people have access to outdoor learning and adventure.

What is the job role?

You will be a casual member of the Coventry Outdoors staff team delivering a range of outdoor and environmental education activities in a variety of settings working with children, young people, families, schools and groups across Coventry.

The main areas of delivery are:

  • To support with delivery across our projects and programmes on a casual basis throughout the year and specifically working on our Education and Curriculum programmes offered to Coventry schools and working on our Holiday Activity Camps during the holiday periods.
  • To be responsible for delivering safe, fun, and interactive activity sessions ensuring that current best-practice in relation to the welfare and health and safety of children and young people is followed.
  • As well as leading sessions, you will contribute to the high standard of physical, emotional, and social care offered by Coventry Outdoors. You will have a pastoral role, being a group leader and key contact for children and young people.

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Who are we looking for?

We seek an experienced, enthusiastic, and highly organised individual with a proven track record of working with children and young people in an outdoor setting. You must be energetic, hardworking, and enjoy working as part of a team.

The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate:

  • Relevant experience of working in a school, youth provision, or outdoor centre setting
  • Experience in managing large groups of children, young people, and adults in a range of circumstances and the ability to deliver safety briefings, and activity briefings and provide supervision and support as and when needed.
  • The ability to teach / coach groups in a range of outdoor activities.
  • Ability to relate well to children, young people, and adults within an outdoor setting and to work as part of a small, busy, and dedicated team.
  • Excellent organisational skills - being able to initiate and lead programmes and provision.
  • To have a level of verbal and written communication skills that will facilitate the delivery of activity sessions and safety information.
  • To have high levels of energy, enthusiasm and reliability.
  • To show relevant experience and/or qualification in teaching team tasks, invasion games, bushcraft, survival, orienteering, river studies, or have the willingness to be trained in-house.
  • To show relevant NGB level 1 qualifications, Leadership Awards or recognised equivalent (NGB Level 2 - desirable), or qualifications in Youth Work (Level 2 or Level 3).
  • To have an up to date knowledge and understanding of the contribution outdoor education can make towards the personal, social and academic development of participants.
  • To have a practical understanding of diversity and inclusion at work.
  • To have an understanding of risk management in the outdoors.

The successful candidate needs to be an enthusiastic, motivated self-starter.
