About the team we are recruiting to
Regulatory Services is a service area within Coventry City Council which supports the growth and regulation of the city. The vision and commitment of the team ensures there is a robust platform to guide the delivery of sustainable development, ensuring the protection of Coventry Citizens and supporting the growth of local business.
The Regulation Service is made up of multi-disciplinary professionals including Licensing and Building Compliance, Trading Standards, Food and Safety, Housing Enforcement, Property Licensing and Building Control. These services embrace a range of service areas used by the community which primarily involves people, businesses or organisations needing to obtain some form of consent within the law or are required to comply with various legal provisions.
The service area aims to:
- Ensure that the public, visitors, workers and residents of Coventry have the right to a healthy and safe work and domestic environment;
- Treat all regulated persons and businesses in a fair and consistent manner, through a process of education, persuasion and enforcement, ensuring that the public and businesses observe the law, and
- Protect public health and the wider environment, whilst minimising disruption to enterprise or economic activity and reducing the legislative burden on complaint and business.

What is the job role?
We are looking for a Building Control Enforcement Officer to join our Regulatory Services, to lead and take responsibility for the day to day enforcement of the Building Control in Coventry and play a vital part in the Council’s response to the new Building Enforcement regime .
The main purpose of the role is to deliver a high-quality Building Control Enforcement service in such a way as to provide quality customer focused services that contribute to the achievement of the City Council’s vision and objectives for a growing and sustainable city.
You will be acting as the point of contact for Building Control enforcement matters, including dangerous structures, and to be responsible for technical and legal compliance with the Building Act, Building Regulations and Building Safety Act. The successful candidate will also have a fantastic opportunity to influence and deliver building safety Regulatory and compliance here at Coventry.

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for someone with clear communication skills and technical knowledge of the Building Regulations to manage the day-to-day enforcement to achieve service objectives in agreed time constraints effectively and efficiently.
You will have substantial knowledge of Building Acts and Regulations together with allied legislation relating to Building Control and related areas. You will have knowledge of customer care and the principles of equal opportunities in providing a Building Control function. You will have a proven record of the ability to act as the a technical ensuring compliance and enforcement within the Building Regulations and ancillary legislation.
As a successful candidate you will have an HNC/degree (or equivalent qualification) in Building related subject. You will also be a member, or prepared to works towards being a member, of a relevant professional body or eligible for membership RIBA, RICS or ABE. Experience of working in a relevant Building Control environment is key.
Part Time/Job Share and flexible working options also considered.
