Coventry City Council is the 9th biggest city in England and has ambitious plans to grow its economy, reputation, and quality of life, including by the delivery of the title UK City of Culture in 2021/2022.
The Council’s Business Investment and Culture service have a remit for economic development, inward investment, sustainability, culture, sport, tourism, and events. The team we are recruiting to is responsible for a range of functions, including:
- Delivery of festivals and major events
- Promotion of leisure and business tourism
- Operation of the convention bureau; and
- Management of the fourteenth century St Mary’s Guildhall.
It is a lively group of largely specialist officers with responsibility for strategy, funding and project delivery across its sections. It has recently expanded significantly, taking on new staff to develop and deliver activities stimulated by the title of UK City of Culture in 2021 and being a host of the Commonwealth Games in 2022.
What is the job role?
We are looking for an apprentice Events Assistant to join the Events Team for a busy programme of events in 2022-23. This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience of what it takes to put on a big event, and develop some of the skills and knowledge to start a career in Events while undertaking structured learning towards an Events Assistant Level 3 Apprenticeship.
You will be working on events that the council helps organise such as the BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend, Godiva Festival, Coventry Peace Festival, Christmas Lights Switch On, and more. You may be involved in the closing events of Coventry’s year as UK City of Culture, and also when Coventry plays its part in the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations, The 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, and the International Children’s Games. Additionally, you could also be supporting community groups, local businesses and sports organisations to hold their events in the city.
This will be a busy and varied job role, involving working in the office during planning stages, keeping information up to date, communicating with performers, suppliers, and colleagues in other teams, and responding to customer inquiries. You will be attending stakeholder meetings, joining site visits, and most importantly helping the team run events on the day, backstage behind the scenes, and front of house, dealing with customers.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking someone with enthusiasm for events, a good spoken and written communicator with an eye for accuracy and attention to detail. Ability with numbers is a big plus, with some finance work involved. Someone who is happy to be hands on setting up events, working outdoors, with a strong team ethic.

- Health & Safety is important for people working on and attending events. What sort of things help make an event safe?
- Tell us about something you have organised, and describe the different tasks involved. Did you find anything challenging?
