About the team we are recruiting to

Coventry City Council’s Migration Team is an innovative and dynamic team that is focussed on meeting the needs of newly arriving communities in the city and supporting integration.  The team works with internal and diverse external partners to deliver projects and other interventions based on our migrant needs assessment and other evidence related to the barriers faced by new migrants.

Coventry was one of the first cities to welcome Syrian refugees in 2014, and the team leads a partnership in delivering a resettlement programme welcoming some of the most vulnerable individuals fleeing conflict and persecution from Syria and the Middle-East.  Work is centred on enabling refugees to make Coventry their new home, living with dignity and respect as well as contributing positively to our vibrant and growing city.

Building on Coventry’s history of welcoming new arrivals into the city, we work towards maintaining a strategic overview of our refugee and migrant population including people seeking asylum dispersed to the City.  With over £3.5m already brought into the city, from external funding we establish collaborative partnerships to maximise interventions to promote community cohesion and enable everyone to contribute towards making Coventry a place where people choose to live, learn and work.

The Migration Team celebrates diversity while also ensuring rights, opportunities and responsibilities are understood. Projects including:

  • Building Bridges

  • Ignite Integration Programme, and

  • MiFriendly Cities

aim to promote a more holistic approach towards integration by involving local communities, maximising skills and cultural awareness and creating opportunities for social and economic growth in the city.

What is the job role?

Coventry has a proud record as an International City of Peace and Reconciliation and a City of Sanctuary. The City Council’s Migration Team are seeking to recruit a Programme Officer to manage and deliver an exciting 18-month programme, funded by the Home Office to help Afghan nationals formerly employed by the UK Government and Armed Forces to start a new life in the city.

As one of the most diverse cities in the UK more than one in every seven Coventry residents were born outside of the UK. Coventry was one of the first to offer a place of safety and welcome to Syrian refugees since 2014 and continues to support global refugee resettlement programmes.

This role reports directly to the Project Manager (Resettlement) and will be part of a small team of staff working with newly arrived communities to learn about life in the UK, improve language skills and make a successful transition into employment. The role will focus particularly on the delivery of support to Afghan nationals newly arrived in Coventry.

A ‘people person’ who is flexible in their work approach and has experience in engaging communities and working in partnership the successful candidate should be able to set up and use digital platforms to support and monitor the progress of the client group and able to engage clients to improve participation in the programme.

The Migration Team supports regional work around the dispersal of asylum seekers to the West Midlands and liaises with local providers and partners. The team are also part of and support the Coventry Migration Network which represents voluntary sector partners with an interest in refugees and newly arrived communities. We also work regionally and nationally developing interventions to support the successful integration of refugees and other migrants into the city and promote good community cohesion.

This opportunity calls for an enthusiastic and motivated individual. A natural self-starter, with a can-do attitude, you will ideally have experience of making claims and supporting project administration and of having worked on grant funded programmes. In addition, you will have excellent communication skills, with the ability to meet reporting deadlines. Knowledge of Farsi, Dari or Pushto would be an advantage but not essential.

Candidates with similar experience in other sectors with transferable skills will also be considered.

Who are we looking for?

The following are the key areas we are looking at in candidates:

  • You will have excellent ICT skills and be proficient in using a variety of packages in order to accurately record, analyse, monitor and review information.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team, on your own and with a wide range of partners is also critical to this role and strong analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong numerical skills required to process claims and financial documents, with an eye for detail when processing information.
  • Effective time management skills, with an ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines, prioritise competing work tasks.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with tact and discretion.
  • Excellent communicator with the ability to understand and translate complex information into guidance for staff and partners both verbally and in writing.
  • Experience in handling and processing manual or computerised information, experience in using databases, Word and Excel.

The role is initially fixed term for 18 months.
