The Adult Education Service is part of Coventry City Council.  We provide a wide range of courses for Coventry residents age 19+ and much of our provision is targeted at people with the highest levels of need.

We offer long courses in English, maths, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), ICT/Digital and vocational subjects such as Early Years, along with provision for adults with learning disabilities.

We also offer a very wide range of short community courses in arts, crafts, music, dance, exercise, fitness and family learning.  In addition, we run a highly supportive study programme for young people.

Our work-based learning offer includes Apprenticeships in the following subject areas:

  • Nursery Workers
  • Teaching Assistants
  • Leadership/Management; and
  • Customer Care.

We also provide courses for adults who are seeking work via the Council’s Job Shop.

Our main base is at Southfields Old School, CV1 5EJ, with provision delivered at around 25 other sites within Coventry, mostly in areas of highest need.

We welcome applications from anyone who wants to make a difference to the lives of people in Coventry.

What is the job role?

This is an opportunity for an appropriately qualified and skilled candidate to join the enthusiastic, committed and experienced Coventry Adult Education Service ESOL team.  We deliver high quality, accredited and non accredited ESOL programmes to men and women from a range of cultural backgrounds across Coventry in the morning, afternoon and evening.

This role is a part time (0.5) fixed term contract until July 2024 to develop and manage a year-round ESOL programme for recent arrivals to the city.

Salary will be pro rata to the number of hours worked.

You will work closely with other Coventry Adult Education Service ESOL managers, the Job Shop and Coventry City Council's Migration Team to establish and supervise a year-round Coventry Adult Education Service ESOL programme of intensive courses to meet the needs of learners.  This programme will support learners to improve their English, integrate into the city and prepare them for employment.

The programme will not follow the school year and will continue to run during the school holidays but there is a generous holiday allowance which can be taken at other agreed times of the year.

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Who are we looking for?

You should have an appropriate teaching qualification and an ESOL subject specialist qualification at Level 4 or above.  Flexibility and an ability to work in the school holidays are essential.  Experience of working with mixed level groups and recent arrivals to the UK would be an advantage.

Following recommendations from Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) for an additional pre employment check with effect 1 Sept 22, please note, an online search may form part of this recruitment process.
