Since public health came back home to local government in 2012 – the leadership of the City Council has ensured its prominence in everything that we do. For those who had not recognised this before, they certainly have now as a result of the response needed to the pandemic and for our community recovery. This is an exciting time to join the Public Health Team in Coventry!  

We are in the national spotlight as the UK City of Culture 2021 and a Commonwealth Games 2022 Host City, which will not only attract a large number of visitors to Coventry, but will help lead the UK’s re-set from the pandemic with culture, sport and activity at the heart of this re-imagined future.   

We are on our Covid-19 recovery journey, focusing on reducing case numbers and addressing the increase in health inequalities resulting from the pandemic.

What is the job role?

We’re looking for an inspirational Director who has the energy, innovation and ambition to make a sustained difference to the people of Coventry.

As a member of the One Coventry Leadership Team, you will be integral to the delivery of the One Coventry Plan which has a strong focus throughout improving health and wellbeing in our City.

You’ll target health inequalities with a relentless improvement drive. You’ll build on our excellent relationships with NHS partners and other key agencies, as well as with the people of Coventry through our nationally recognised asset-based approach. Working together with partner originations you will come up with innovative solutions to deliver better health for all.

As the Public Health and Wellbeing Director, you will work with the regional and national public health architecture to combat threats such as health hazards and infectious diseases. You’ll be our principal adviser on health matters, but just as importantly, provide strategic leadership of the integration of public health functions and outcomes into all aspects of the Council’s and Cities’ work.

This demanding, varied and interesting role requires a person experienced in leading the agenda to improve the health and wellbeing of residents, reducing inequalities in health outcomes and protecting local communities from public health hazards. 

Who are we looking for?

As an experienced Senior Public Health professional, you will showcase the following experience, skills and abilities;  

  • High level of understanding of epidemiology and statistics, public health practice, health protection, health promotion, health economics and health care evaluation.  
  • Full understanding of and commitment to addressing relationships and cultures of organisations that impact on the wider determinants of health.  
  • Knowledge of methods of developing clinical quality assurance, quality improvement and evidence based clinical and/or public health practice.  
  • Developed staff management skills; providing clear vision and objective setting and willingness to tackle sub-optimal performance.  
  • Experience of working in senior public health roles with a track record of delivering public health improvements.  
  • Experience of establishing and promoting clear public health vision aligned to the corporate business strategy and consistent with government policy.   
  • Experience of successful working with local authority elected members.  
  • Appreciation of the Public Health system across health, local authority and other sectors.  
  • Ability to respond appropriately in unplanned and unforeseen circumstances.  
  • Inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register/GDC Specialist List or UK Public Health (Specialist) Register(UKPHR) 

You’ll also have wider strategic leadership responsibilities for newly arrived communities; Insight and data; violence prevention and reduction ; domestic abuse support and integrated commissioning of services, as well as being the Caldicott Guardian for the Council.  

A role like this does not come along very often in such a progressive City, in which health and wellbeing is at the heart of our ambitious programme for the next decade.
